Relax with Seattle Back Spasm Relief
July 22nd, 2011
It happens at the worst time. Excitedly, you kick off your Emerald City weekend by participating in a sports activity or by doing yard work, and suddenly you are stricken with back pain. This affliction strikes your lower or upper back directly between your shoulder blades, slamming your active day to a halt. So, what is the cause for this involuntary, uncomfortable pain? Back spasms are the culprit, as seen and treated by Chiropractors in Seattle each day. Read on to see if your pain is caused by back spasms.
Identifying Back Spasms
Anytime your back muscles sharply and involuntarily tighten (especially when you are intensely using your back muscles), you are experiencing a back spasm. The underlying issue may be a damaged muscle, which commonly arises from sports or work-related injuries. Often, these contractions occur near the spinal cord and their nerve roots. The tight muscle puts pressure on the nerves, often resulting in severe pain. Dehydration and potassium and calcium deficiencies increase the occurrence of back spasms.
Throughout the Queen City, chiropractors see back pain sufferers with serious back spasms that are caused by common spine conditions, such as herniated discs, spinal stenosis, arthritis, and scoliosis.
Herniated discs push on the spinal cord nerves. Spinal stenosis causes compression of the spinal cord, resulting in a narrowing of the nerve openings or the spinal canal. The narrowing causes a painful pressure on the nerves. If you experience spasms and are suffering from one of these conditions, it is essential to seek chiropractic care.
Please seek medical care if your back spasms are accompanied by the following symptoms:
- Decreased sensation in limbs and shoulders
- Total loss of balance
- Failing bladder or bowel control accompanied by weak legs
- Numbness and weakness on one part of the body
- Paralysis
Leaving Back Spasms Untreated
The largest risk of letting your back spasms go untreated is the possibility of a serious underlying condition. Ignoring the spasms may result in nervous system damage. The nervous system controls your sensations, movement, and the functioning of your internal organs. Any time you are experiencing back pain, the matter should be treated as soon as possible. The previous symptoms could become a permanent reality if the spasms are ignored.
Other serious conditions that may be causing your back spasms include:
- Spinal canal infection
- Gallstones
- Kidney stones
- Kidney Infections
- Tumor

Stop ‘Expecting’ Pregnancy Back Pain
July 13th, 2011
Ah, pregnancy, a most exciting time of life. Everything about your body is different. Your face, hands, and feet swell, and you may even be plagued with morning sickness and tremendous stress. As if all of these things are not enough, you are also experiencing sharp and consistent back pain. At least 50% to 70% of pregnant women suffer from this pain during the second trimester – but there is hope! Seattle chiropractors are treating mother’s-to-be with alternative, natural back pain treatments for their aching, tired spines.
Back pain can be expected during pregnancy for several reasons. Your walking style is different. The extra gained weight, has caused you to take on a new walking style, and has also caused you back pain. Not only is your walking style different, but so are your hormones which cause your ligaments and muscles to weaken. There are simple tips for preventing this pain. Read on to learn how to put an end to ‘expecting’ back pain.
Perfecting your Pregnant Posture
The first and most important back pain prevention tip is practicing good posture. Naturally, your stomach expands as the baby grows, causing your center of gravity to be skewed. To remedy this following these steps:
- Stand up tall and straight
- Relax the shoulders and back
- Make sure knees don’t touch (wide stance)
It’s very important that you remember these tips for good posture even when you are sitting in a chair or on a sofa. Place a small pillow in your chair and position it in the curve of your spine (mid-back). Also, if you find it difficult to follow these preceding steps, try balancing a book on your head a few times each night. You’ll start to see a reduction in back pain by simply standing straight and tall.
Preventing Pregnancy Back Pain
Avoiding back pain caused by pregnancy weight gain is just a matter of staying active every day and of course eating healthy. You are inevitably going to gain weight; there’s no way around that. The average amount of weight gained during pregnancy is 30 pounds. This additional weight puts extra stress on your lumbar spine, as well as pressure on your pelvic nerves. So, what can you do to avoid developing common spine conditions such herniated discs, bulging discs, and other back problems?
Exercising everyday will strengthen the muscles, reduce stiffness, and relieve stress on your spine. Go out of your way to walk farther by: parking far away, taking the stairs, and of course by drinking a lot of water (that will get you out of your chair!). Swimming and stationary cycling are wonderful and safe exercises to reduce your back pain during pregnancy.
Pregnancy Back Pain Treatments
Seattle chiropractic care options, such as spinal manipulations and manual adjustments, are a common method for treating back pain in expectant mothers. These non-invasive procedures are administered by some of the most qualified and experienced Seattle chiropractors. Cervical Spine Injuries in Athletes
June 6th, 2011
Over half of all sports injuries inflict the cervical spine. If you are currently experiencing neck or cervical spine pain, this may have occurred during a sports activity. These types of injuries are common and effect athletes of all ages. Fortunately, there are a number of natural, non-invasive Seattle Chiropractics treatment options available depending on the type of inflicted injury.
The Cervical Spine
Your cervical spine starts at the base of the skull with seven small vertebrae accompanied by eight pairs of cervical nerves. These components are supported by a complex and delicate musculoskeletal system including ligaments, tendons, and muscles. It doesn’t take a lot impact or over exertion to damage these delicate vertebrae or nerves. Generally, the types of cervical injuries are of an acute manner, such as damage to a disc.
Sports Affecting the Cervical Spine
10 to 15% of all football players at some point have a cervical injury. Other contact sports that are responsible for the injuries to the cervical neck include rugby, lacrosse, hockey, boxing and wrestling. A number of non-contact sports also contribute to cervical spine injuries in athletes; these include diving, figure skating, surfing, and weightlifting.
Types of Cervical Injuries & Treatment Options
Athletes generally experience what is called an acute injury, or a sudden injury that causes immediate painful results, but does not permanently affect the athlete.
Acute Cervical Injuries & Treatment Options:
- Whiplash- Any sport where there is a sudden physical impact between another player or obstacle may cause whiplash. Chiropractic Care and Spinal Decompression are most commonly used to treat this type of trauma.
- Cervical sprains/strains-Football, gymnastics, and hockey are just a few sports that may result in a neck injury of these types. Injury rehabilitation and postural correction programs may be necessary if the injury is severe, in this case there may be a torn ligament. Otherwise, ice and rest may be the best solution.
- Intervertebral disc injuries- Cervical herniated discs and bulging discs are popular in any of the previously mentioned sports. Chiropractors may utilize Cold Laser Therapy and Spinal Decompression to relieve the pain associated with these common spine conditions.
- Cervical fractures and dislocations- Unfortunately, these conditions generally require an invasive procedure to correct the damage.
- Cervical Stenosis- Often spinal stenosis arises from sports trauma, which may cause pressure on the nerve roots or even on the spinal cord. Spinal decompression and injury rehabilitation and postural corrections programs are ideal treatments for immediate pain relief.
In the event of a cervical sports injury, immediate attention should be sought from a trained chiropractor or back pain specialist. Northwest Spine Clinic is a Seattle Chiropractor with experience in sports injury therapy, and many other back problems. Call today to schedule a free consultation at 877.615.0202.

Sneezing in Seattle? Try a Chiropractor
April 28th, 2011
Seasonal allergies plague thousands of Seattle residents each year. Also known as Seasonal Allergic Rhinitis, allergies are one of the few notoriously unpleasant heralds of spring. While many people try to find relief through medications, masks – just about anything, really – few realize that their chiropractor may be able to help. This is because individuals who have received spinal trauma from sports injuries, automobile injuries, or work-related injuries, are often more susceptible to allergies.
What Causes Spring Allergies?
An allergy is actually an immune system response to an environmental substance that causes damage. Pollen, an allergen, is most commonly the culprit of spring allergies, which is generally referred to as hay fever. When the pollen count is high, it creates a hypersensitive reaction in the immune system, resulting in itchiness, sneezing, sniffling, and watery eyes.
How do Spinal Injuries Cause Allergies?
Your immune system works hard to keep you operating at 100%, and provides a high resistance to disease and infection. Studies and research have shown that in order for your immune system to properly communicate, it relies on an undisrupted communication between your brain and spinal cord, i.e. the nervous system. Misaligned vertebrae, or subluxations, will likely cause an imbalance in your nervous system, resulting in a weaker immune system. In many cases, people don’t even know they’ve suffered an injury to their vertebrae until they visit a Seattle chiropractor.
Chiropractors May Relieve Allergy Symptoms
Stress caused from the misaligned vertebrae can make the immune system function improperly. Through Seattle chiropractics, such as spinal decompression therapy, which helps properly adjust the spine, your chiropractor can help release this stress. This allows a now unencumbered and healthier nervous system to get to work neutralizing the numerous allergens we’re all exposed to in Seattle.
If you are suffering from severe spring allergies, your condition may be worsened by a known or unknown spinal trauma. Spring allergies are not the only allergies that can be alleviated by chiropractic services – chronic allergy sufferers may also benefit. Find a Seattle Chiropractor near you to assess your spinal health – and stop the sniffling and sneezing by correcting your vertebral alignment!

Spinal Decompression in Seattle
April 14th, 2011
Spinal decompression is a safe, Seattle spine treatment non-invasive treatment for neck and back pain sufferers. Decompression of the spine may be the answer for many individuals experiencing numbness, tingling, weakness, and pain that effects the proper functioning of their upper and lower extremities. If you’re a Seattle resident and are considering spinal decompression for your back pain, read on to learn a little more about how it works.
What is Spinal Decompression?
Spinal decompression is a form of back pain therapy that uses a special decompression machine to apply negative pressure and correct traction of the spinal discs. This back pain treatment is effective at relieving pain from conditions such as degenerative disc disease, sciatica and pinched nerves.
Spinal Decompression Machines
Spinal decompression machines are used throughout the world (in over 200 countries) and have been approved by the FDA to relieve neck and back pain. Applications include herniated discs, bulging discs, and other common back pain conditions that put pressure on the nerves of the spinal column.
How do Spinal Decompression Machines Work?
Most decompression machines utilize motorized rollers to manipulate the spinal column precisely at the affected areas. Negative pressure is created inside the disc to suck in or bring back the portion[s] of the damaged disc. These portions are also gently stretched to relieve pressure from the affected nerves, while properly aligning the spinal discs. The spaces between the damaged spinal discs are freed, giving the affected areas a chance to heal. This treatment allows for true healing, not just temporary relief from the painful symptoms of neck and back pain.
Spinal Decompression Success Rate
This non-invasive, alternative back pain treatment has proven through various tests and trials to have an 88% complete success rate. Not only does it have a high success rate, it has no side effects, other than mild aches and pains 24 hours after the treatment.
Seattle Spine Injury sufferers can find relief through spinal decompression. This region is blessed with a number of quality Seattle chiropractic clinics that offer spinal decompression treatments. So go ahead – visit a reputable Seattle chiropractor for a consultation to see if Spinal Decompression is the right treatment option for you!

How to Find a Good Seattle Chiropractor
March 18th, 2011
Life is fast-paced, and locating a reliable and knowledgeable Seattle chiropractor may be difficult when time is a constraint. But when your back pain reaches the point that it’s slowing you down anyway, it might be time to take a break! Use your time wisely by following the suggestions below to find a great Seattle back doctor that can provide you with lasting back pain relief.
You may choose to begin your search for a chiropractor using local resources, such as the Seattle Times. In addition to downtown Seattle based clinics, you’ll likely see many advertisements for Redmond chiropractors, Lynnwood chiropractors, Federal Way chiropractors, and other easily accessible clinics surrounding the Seattle area. The “Classifieds” section usually has advertisements for reputable medical practices as well. Since many newspapers are now available online, you can usually click on the advertisement and go right to the clinics web site.
If newspapers aren’t your thing, internet search engines are a fantastic way to find relief for many common back pain conditions. Google Places is one of the best resources because it includes pictures, contact information, and reviews. Blogs are also great for reviews and for explaining the benefits of alternative back pain treatments. They go into detail about real people’s experiences with various doctors and clinics, and can help steer you in the right direction.
Popular social networks like Facebook, Merchant Circle, and Yelp for Businesses provide credible information and the opportunity to connect with local back pain clinics. What’s the best part about using social networks? Once you find a Seattle chiropractor you love, you can share them with the world by adding them as a friend or a favorite. You can even write a positive review about them to help others in their search for back pain relief!
Finally, visiting the chiropractor’s web page directly and taking a few minutes to read about the kinds of services they offer and what types of common spine conditions they treat can be extremely helpful in the decision making process. You may be surprised to find out that many clinics provide natural and alternative back pain treatments, like spinal decompression and cold laser therapy, in addition to Seattle Chiropractics. Some clinics even offer new patient promotions, such as a free consultation or discount on your first treatment.
The sources mentioned above are all good options for back pain sufferers who have a lot of questions but not a lot of time to search for the answers. An even more direct approach is to write an e-mail or make a quick phone call to one or multiple clinics for increased personal communication. When it comes to resolving back pain problems, it’s always a good idea to do a little research in advance about who will be taking care of you. Using these suggestions, you can take time out for yourself, without sacrificing efficiency!
